Barred Owl
Barred OwlCut paper and acrylic ink. 18x24Birthday present for my dad. He saw me working on the owl’s head, and remarked that he liked it. Decided to finish it up and send it to him. The tree is one piece of card stock, the owl is a single sheet of rice paper, and the background is painted with acrylic ink.
Safe As Houses
Safe As HousesHand-cut books. My take on the 2008 housing crisis. The books are stacked in chronological order from bottom to top, balancing the house on its roof peak. “Safe as houses” is a British phrase from the 1800s after a stock market crash that led investors to plow money into real estate (because it was considered safe) only to have housing bubble and burst.
Young Ambition’s Ladders
Young Ambition’s LaddersPaper and acrylic inks. 12x12The black is cut from a single sheet of paper. The background are rice paper squares painted with acrylic ink.
Sedge Wren No. 1
Sedge Wren No. 1Cut paper and acrylic ink. 18x24Inspired by my good friend's first novel. Three layers of glass hold the components.
Sedge Wren No. 2
Sedge Wren No. 2Cut paper and acrylic ink. Based on my friend's first novel, this is another try at the same composition because I liked it. Whereas the first one used negative space and all birds, this piece uses all sorts of symbols from the book in positive space. The underlay of leaves is cut from a single sheet of paper with a painted sheet of paper over it. Three layers of glass hold the components.
Sedge Wren No. 3

Kraken of Panama City

Not Your Symbol
Not Your SymbolHand-cut paper and acrylic paint. 18x24The title is a reference to the overuse of eagles as symbols rather than just appreciating them as beautiful, wild animals. Funny story: I explained the title to my dad. He said, “I get that…but the eagle does symbolize freedom.”
